Calamine: Guestbook

Gabriel Quade

November 16, 2017

your band's music is timeless. Honestly I wouldn't have heard you without SeaLab but I'm really glad I found you as opposed to living a whole life without Calamine in my life's soundtrack. I wonder what the status of Calamine is these days. I mean almost 20 years after the first official release. I hope all is well with everyone who's played a roll in creating something so beautiful and amazing. I hope all is well and that life has been sweet to you all.

New fan for life,

I'm sure you have heard it before but I started really digging your music when I first heard it on Sealab. I think the lyrics to The Accident are some of the best that's been written. I have also been listening to Flicker a lot lately and that song really surprised me even though I've heard it before. Are you guys still together as a group and do you still tour? If you do please come to Austin

I had Trampoline in an old dusty playlist I made in Sealab days. Going through a rough time right now, I dug up my old playlist, and found it -- made me cry, it felt so comforting! Thank you and please make more!

Last night I couldn't sleep due to pain, something that happens more and more as the years since the accident go by. I thrashed about for a while, trying to find some position, place, distraction or diversion that would allow me to get through the seemingly endless procession of minutes, if they can still be called 'minutes' when each one stretches so much longer than the last before the numbers on the clock finally change. There is a whole list of things I reach for in times like these, an actual list on the back cover of the notebook in my bedstand; anything that has proven to be effective in the past goes on the list, my hope being that anything that worked once will work again. In practice, this isn't true as often as I would like it to be.

But in the wee hours I looked at the list, and one line stood out: "meditate on your last good memory". As I was trying to figure out what my last good memory was, an echo - difficult to grasp or see clearly, but persistent - kept pulling me in one direction, though I couldn't see why. Finally I realized that it was a lyric, something about trying to find the last good memory you have, And then it clicked: wasn't that from a Calamine song? I dropped your music into a playlist and put on headphones to find out.

And it worked: a few hours later, the worst of the night was behind me. I was even able to nap a bit, and woke feeling better than I had in a long time... in long enough that this morning will be what comes to mind the next time I need to dredge up my last good memory.

For that - for having the courage to share these thoughts and feelings with us; for leaving marks on the path so others trying to navigate their way from the darkness to the dawn know that the dawn *will* come; for giving us a much-needed soundtrack for times like these: thank you.

Your music saved my life. Whenever I wanted to do the unthinkable I sat and listened to your E.P. and just for a flash of a second I smiled. From then on I have listened and loved and held on to life. I do this because if music like what you guys make exists, then I maybe the world isn't such an awful place. Thank you for making this world a better place and touching my soul in a way that no one will ever understand. You mean the world to me.

Really nice music, hard to find people who actually put pride in their music. Instead they are all chasing headlines and hits. Your band and Nirvana are my two biggest inspirationsI've been working on building my own music career... anyways loved your music.

I knew there had to be something more to you guys than the Sealab2021 theme, and I was right! (not that that the theme wasn't awesome on its own, it totally is). Just recently discovered your other songs, wish I had done so sooner. Much love from Manila!

Julie,

That demo of The Truth About You might be my favorite, it's been years now and it keeps taking on new meaning, seems to grow beside me and I am so grateful you took the time to make it for us. Thanks also to Jakob D. for sharing, I hope you'll post it for everyone else some time. Well wishes for you and yours, all the best.

No matter what you do, remember that you have us dedicated fans who will support you and we're counting on you all to keep going.

Your music is amazing, mellow and just the right touch of melancholy for old-time longing while describing a future of wonder and excitement.

Keep going, we appreciate you.

I'm from Russia, Velikiy Novgorod. I was 15 when i heard you for the first time in my life. I mean i had never listened to this kind of music before, i was listening to modern "posthardcore" bands mostly. Well that day when my ears transmitted your signals to my brain i found true peace, true emotions, i threw away that fake face of mine, i started digging and i discovered emo (90's) for myself. Thank you very very much Calamine. You've changed me, because i was much more selfish in those days. Please live, and write music. My favourites are Astronaut and Trampoline, though all of your songs remind me of this nice and cosy feeling of believing in myself, in my own soul, which is trying to stay uncorrupted for the past 5 years. Now i'm 20, and i'm kinda happy to have you in my life, cause my life is full of solitude and grief. You are the one of the things that light a candle upon my head..thank you

We met very quickly this weekend at the Green River Festival -- you were wonderful and I'm so enjoying listening to your other songs online...

Why haven't you posted Stop Me on Youtube? I don't know how you feel about it, but I think it's one of your best songs

It really captures that feeling of being drunk and making some kind of irreparable mistake that ruins a friendship. And on top of that, it's just a good song. You should pimp it out some more.

I used to be confused by Sealab 2021. My cousin watched it when I was 5 but I always lived the song and now I think about it... I might make my mom buy the CD an T-Shirt for me in the near future. Can never have too many uncommon t-shirts. I'll be sure everyone knows where it came from ;)

I always thought "These days" was about Mia Zapata (because the place names sound similar to Seattle names) but just looked it up and it appears the real location is Iowa. The basic story, however, sad as it is, sounds similar. Google is failing me here - who is the song about?

Thanks for the music, for the feeling, and for the hours of enjoyment.
